One Head of Unruly Hair Changed Everything.
Our Story
It All Started with a Scrunchie
In the 1980s, unable to find a scrunchie capable of holding her wildly curly hair, Laurie created her own and founded her first company, Ribbons, with Nordstrom becoming her first department-store customer.
As the business grew, she recognized another opportunity: beautifully crafted French hair accessories that were as functional as they were timeless. With no introductions or roadmap, Laurie flew to France, gathered factory addresses from local trucking companies, and knocked on artisans’ doors, asking them to take a chance on her—and they did.
After selling Ribbons to become a stay-at-home mother, Laurie soon discovered that her entrepreneurial spirit, or her inner “lemonade stand girl,” could not be quieted.
In 1997, she returned to the industry, drawing on the artisan relationships she had formed in France to build something entirely her own: France Luxe.
